Somatic Massage

Why Somatic Massage Is the Missing Link in Your Healing Journey

September 29, 20259 min read

You’ve tried the counselling or maybe you don’t like the idea of working with societal standards for talk therapy. Maybe you’ve read a few books. You’ve tried meditation, journaling, breathwork… maybe even a few retreats.

And yet, something still feels stuck.

Your body tenses when it shouldn’t. Certain memories still seem hold a charge. You catch yourself spiralling into old emotional patterns, even though you “know better.”

And the missing link? It might not be your mind.

At Gelous Spa here in Calgary, I’m not offering your average massage. I’m Helena Zebian, a trauma-informed practitioner with over 17 years’ experience in somatic therapy massage and deep subconscious healing work. And I’m here to tell you: your body has been trying to do the work your mind couldn’t finish. It’s time to let it.

This isn’t about pampering. It’s about releasing emotional trauma within the body that talk therapy can’t reach, reconnecting with the emotions held deep in the organs of your body in a safe, supported way, to finally start shifting what’s been buried deep for far too long.

Keep reading as you’ll discover why somatic massage is one of the most overlooked tools in trauma healing and why, for many women in Calgary just like you, it’s the piece that finally made everything else click.

What Is Somatic Massage?

Let’s start here because if you’ve only ever had a massage for tight shoulders or stress relief, this might feel like a completely different stack of cards.

Somatic massage is not about fixing knots or chasing tension. It’s about listening to what your body is trying to say and giving it the space, safety, and skilled touch it needs to release what’s been stored inside.

So, what makes it “somatic”?

The word somatic comes from the Greek word soma, meaning “the body.” Somatic therapies focus on the connection between your mind and body and how experiences (especially traumatic ones) are stored not just in your thoughts, but in your muscles, fascia, and nervous system.

A somatic massage is designed to help regulate your nervous system, increase body awareness, and gently starts opening up the release of held trauma or emotion. It’s often slower, more intentional, and more collaborative than a typical massage. We recommend moving into the deeper work (subconscious imprinting) where we get to the deeper roots of everything.

At Gelous Spa in Calgary, this means you’re not just lying silently while someone rubs lotion on your back. You’re part of the process - tuning into your sensations, breathing through resistance, and allowing your body to speak in ways it maybe never has before.

Where Subconscious Imprinting or SIT Comes In

This is where we go even deeper.

In many sessions, bodywork naturally reveals patterns, beliefs, or memories that have been buried—things like:

  • “I have to hold it all together”

  • “I’m not safe unless I’m in control”

  • “I can’t let go or everything will fall apart”

These beliefs don’t live in your conscious mind. They live in your tissues, your gut, your shoulders, your breath.

That’s why I integrate the Subconscious Imprinting Technique (S.I.T.) into the healing process.

S.I.T. helps us identify and clear the root subconscious beliefs that have been running the show behind the scenes. It’s a modality I offer both in-person and virtually, and it complements somatic massage beautifully—because it allows us to address what your body brings up at the root level.

So when you’re on the table and a wave of emotion or memory rises, we don’t just soothe it—we decode it. We work with it. And through both body-based touch and subconscious work, we release it for good.

Regular Massage vs Somatic + Subconscious Work

This isn’t just another massage. It’s body, mind + soul wisdom.

Your body already knows how to heal. It’s just been waiting for the right space and the right support to do it safely.

At Gelous Spa, my goal isn’t just to help you feel better for a day. It’s to help you shift patterns that have lived in your system for years. Patterns that may have been holding you back, draining your energy, or keeping you stuck in cycles of overthinking, overworking, and overriding your own needs.

The Body Keeps the Score in Real Life

You’ve probably heard the phrase by now—“the body keeps the score.” It’s the title of a bestselling book by trauma researcher Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, and it's become a bit of a buzzword in healing spaces. But here’s the thing: it’s not just a theory. It’s real. And if you’re reading this, chances are, you’ve felt it.

Your mind might have processed the past. You’ve journaled, meditated, done the therapy. You understand your story.

But your body? It still flinches. It still freezes. It still wakes you up at 3am with a racing heart, or locks your jaw when you’re trying to speak up in a meeting, or tightens your chest the second you walk into a room full of expectations.

That’s the score.

What the Book Doesn’t Tell You

In the book The Body Keeps the Score, van der Kolk explains that trauma isn't just a memory or an emotional wound, it’s a physiological imprint. It changes the way your brain and body interact. Your nervous system stays on high alert. Your body holds tension in places that were never meant to carry it.

But while the book gives powerful insight, it doesn’t always give you the how.

How do you actually shift that trauma out of your body?

How do you stop looping through the same emotional patterns over and over again?

That’s where somatic therapy massage and Subconscious Imprinting come in.

From Theory to Table: What This Looks Like in Practice

Let’s say your nervous system learned, early on that it wasn’t safe to relax. That you had to be hyper-aware, hyper-achieving, or emotionally invisible just to stay “okay.”

You might carry that through adulthood by:

  • Clenching your jaw constantly

  • Holding your breath during stressful conversations

  • Carrying your shoulders up to your ears

  • Struggling to cry, even when you want to

  • Feeling exhausted even after sleeping 8 hours

No amount of mindset work will fully shift that, because it’s not a mindset issue. It’s a body-held pattern, wired into your system for survival.

In a session at Gelous Spa in Calgary, we work with that directly.

Through gentle, trauma-informed touch, we start helping your nervous system experience something different: what it feels like to be safe in your body. From there, I use Subconscious Imprinting to help you rewire the deep, hidden beliefs driving the body’s reactions.

It’s like helping your entire body, mind and soul finally exhale, not just physically, but emotionally, and energetically.

What You Might Notice

In somatic therapy massage, especially when combined with Subconscious Imprinting, healing doesn’t always look dramatic—but it always runs deep.

Some clients experience:

  • Gentle waves of emotion rising to the surface

  • Memories, visuals, or thoughts appearing out of nowhere

  • Trembling, tingling, heat, or coolness in certain areas

  • A sense of remembering something their body had stored and forgotten

Others describe it as:

  • “The first time I’ve felt safe in my body in years”

  • “Like years of therapy, but in one hour”

  • “Finally exhaling something I didn’t even know I was holding”

And sometimes, it’s simply quiet. Spacious. A moment of peace in a body that’s been on high alert for far too long.

You’re Not Just Healing Your Story

Here’s something I see often, especially in the powerful, high-achieving women I work with here in Calgary:

They’re not just carrying their own pain.

They’re carrying the stress of their mothers, fathers, siblings and others. The suppressed rage of grandmothers. The generational patterns of silence, survival, perfectionism, and self-sacrifice.

This is generational trauma. And it shows up in the body and through emotions held deep in the organs.

You might not know why you freeze when someone raises their voice.

Or why you shrink around authority figures.

Or why it feels unsafe to rest, even when you’re exhausted.

Sometimes that’s your own lived experience. But sometimes?

It’s an imprint you inherited.

Through trauma-informed touch and subconscious imprinting, we don’t just work with what happened to you, we also gently untangle what’s been passed down through generations. You don’t have to carry what was never yours to begin with.

Healing on the Table Looks Like...

  • Releasing tension that’s decades or generations old

  • Reconnecting with your inner voice and body signals

  • Reprogramming survival patterns into safety patterns

  • Letting your body know: it’s safe to let go now

At Gelous Spa, this isn’t a luxury - it’s liberation.

And it’s work I’m honoured to do every single day with women across Calgary and around the world.

Is This Right for You?

You don’t need to be falling apart to benefit from this.

In fact, most of my clients look “fine” on the outside. They’re successful. High-functioning. People come to them for answers.

But inside, they’re exhausted.

Disconnected.

And ready to stop carrying it all alone.

You’re ready for this work if:

  • You’ve plateaued in therapy or personal development

  • You feel like you’ve “done the work” but something’s still stuck

  • You’re curious about body-based healing, but need someone grounded and trustworthy

  • You’re open to exploring emotional release, even if it feels a bit edgy

  • You want support that meets you with respect, skill, and deep presence

You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to be ready to come back home to yourself.

What to Expect Before, During & After a Somatic Massage

Before:

You’ll fill out an intake form. We’ll have a quick chat to find out which areas you want to focus on.

During:

After a short chat, you’ll lie on a heated table, fully supported, covered with a cozy blanket. We usualy work on the back, the neck, shoulders and head with some work to the face and inside the mouth (buccal massage).

There is some interactive somatic work depending on the individual. There may be an emotional release.

Everything is led by you and your nervous system’s capacity.

After:

You will most likely feel lighter. Sleepy. Emotional. Energized.

Sometimes you’ll feel immediate shifts. Other times, the integration unfolds over a few days.
