Why Somatic Massage + Somatic Facials Are Blowing Up in Calgary And Why Your Therapist Might Actually Tell You to Go Get One
By Helena Zebian, Gelous Spa | The Best Somatic Massage & Facials in Calgary
Okay, can I be really honest with you for a second?
I know you've done the work. Like, a LOT of work.
Therapy. Journaling. The books…. The podcasts. The breathwork app you downloaded and actually used for three weeks straight, but is now collecting virtual dust.
Your shoulders are still as tight as rocks. Your jaw is clenched right now, isn't it. You wake up between 1-3am for no reason (wait how do you even know that??). You're tired but you cannot switch off. And no matter how much you "know" what you need to do, something in your body just... hasn't caught up.
Here's the thing nobody tells you, but today I am.
Sometimes your body has to feel safe before the rest of you can truly heal.
Not think safe. Not understand safe. Actually, physically, inside your body feel it.
And THAT is why somatic massage and somatic facials are suddenly super popular.
Women aren't booking these because they want a nice massage (I mean, they do, but that's not the point).
They're booking them because their actual therapists and counsellors are recommending them. Because something is clicking. Because they're tired of holding onto the body symptoms.. the chronic pain and tension, the anxiety that lives like a gremlin in the tummy.
Let me break it all down for you. Grab your glass of wine. Let's chat for a second….
So What Even IS Somatic Massage? Like Actually?
Okay so. "Somatic" just means body. That's it. From the Greek word soma.
So somatic massage is massage that works WITH your body and specifically with your nervous system not just on your muscles.
A regular massage? Gorgeous. Love it. It loosens you up, feels amazing, you float out of there.
A somatic massage goes deeper. It's asking: why are you holding so much tension in the first place? And can we help your body actually let it go, not just for an hour, but for real?
Here's the nerdy bit made simple: when something hard happens: stress, grief, a rough patch, years of holding it all together, your body basically goes into survival mode.
Fight. Flight. Freeze. It's supposed to be temporary. But when it happens over and over, or for a really long time? That survival energy gets stuck. In your shoulders. Your jaw. Your chest. Your stomach, even in your face (but more on that shortly).
Your body is basically still trying to protect you from something that happened ages ago. Bless it. But also enough already.
Somatic massage works with that. Gently. Slowly. It uses intentional touch to help your nervous system feel safe enough to actually let go. Not just the muscles. The deeper stuff. The stored stuff.
And don’t let it scare you, but many women cry in somatic sessions. Not because it hurts. Because something finally moves that's been stuck for years, possibly decades.
And wait… a Somatic Facial? That's a Thing?
Oh it's SO a thing. And once I explain it, you'll never look at your face or regular facials the same way.
Your face holds SO MUCH. Think about how many times you've held back tears in public. Kept your face calm when you were raging inside. Smiled through the yes when you wanted to say F**k NO. All those emotions pushed down for so long.
All of that goes somewhere. It goes into your jaw. Your forehead. The tight little spot between your eyebrows.
And here's the wild part science has actually proven that your skin is directly connected to your nervous system. When you're stressed, your body releases hormones that cause inflammation in your skin. Dullness. Breakouts. Puffiness. That tired, heavy look that no amount of skincare can touch.
A somatic facial treats your skin AND your nervous system at the same time. It uses intentional touch on the face, special techniques that work with the emotions of the face and body.
You come out looking different AND feeling different. Because you ARE different. Something finally let go.
Why Is Everyone in Calgary Suddenly Talking About This?
Right? I've noticed it too. And here's what I think is happening.
The pandemic broke something open in a lot of us. We burned out in a way that didn't bounce back. We kept going, kept coping, kept functioning because that's what we do. But underneath that? A lot of us hit a wall. A quiet one. The kind where everything looks fine from the outside and inside you feel like you're running on fumes.
And women, especially women in their 40s and 50s who have been the capable one for decades started asking a different question. Not "how do I manage this better?" but "why does this keep living in my body no matter what I do?"
Books like The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk changed everything. Suddenly there were words for something women had felt forever that the body holds onto what the mind hasn't fully processed. That your tight shoulders aren't just about posture. That your skin issues might actually be your stress, showing up on your face.
And then people started looking for something that could reach it. Something that goes into the body and works from the inside out.
That's somatic work. And I am very much here for it.
Okay But Does It Actually Work? Like, Scientifically?
Yes. And I love this question because people think this stuff is woo woo until they see the research behind it all.
A massive analysis in 2022 looked at somatic therapy and found it genuinely helps with trauma, anxiety, and stress that lives in the body. Like, measurably. Heart rate variability, which is basically a measure of how healthy and regulated your nervous system is actually improved with somatic work.
Brain scans showed real changes in how people process emotion and feel safety in their bodies after somatic sessions. Not placebo. Actual brain changes.
Research has also shown that combining somatic awareness with massage makes it MORE effective for stress and trauma or massage alone. The awareness piece is what unlocks a different level of healing.
And on the skin side? A big review published in 2025 confirmed what a lot of us already suspected: stress hormones directly cause skin inflammation, break down your skin's barrier, and speed up the ageing process at a cellular level. A dual board-certified dermatologist literally presented at a major medical conference on why stress and trauma are skin issues, not just mental health ones — and why somatic healing approaches are showing real results.
So. Yeah. The science is there. The woo and the research are finally aligning.
Wait, Why Would My Therapist Send Me For This?
This is actually my favourite part to talk about.
So here's the thing about therapy…. specifically talk therapy. It's incredible. It genuinely helps. But it works from the top down. Meaning: you understand things with your brain, and the hope is that your body follows.
For a lot of people, it does! But for a lot of women dealing with deep stress, burnout, or things that have been stored in the body for a long time, the brain gets it way before the body does. You can literally understand exactly why you clench your jaw, and still clench your jaw.
Somatic work is bottom up. It starts in the body. It speaks to the nervous system in the language it actually responds to… which is touch, breath, movement, and safety. Not words. I have talked to so many clients who have tried virtual sessions and not been a huge fan. This is why coaching programs aren’t the best fit either.
More and more therapists and counsellors are recognizing this work. They can see their clients making progress in the room, but still stuck in their bodies. So they're recommending body based work to run alongside the therapy. Not instead of it. Alongside it.
Because when your body finally feels safe, when your nervous system gets a real experience of regulation, the therapy work goes deeper. It sticks better. It actually lands.
Somatic massage and somatic facials in Calgary are filling that gap. And it's not a fringe thing anymore (although I don’t mind being fringe to be fair). It's becoming part of how we think about whole person healing.
Honestly? Here's How You Know You Need This
Read this slowly and just notice what happens in your body.
You wake up tired even after a full night's sleep. Your jaw hurts in the morning. You carry everyone else's emotions without even thinking about it. You feel guilty when you sit still. You're amazing at coping, yet quietly exhausted by it. Your skin looks dull and puffy and stressed even when you're eating well and drinking your water. You can't remember the last time you felt truly relaxed in your body, not just your brain relaxed, but your whole body relaxed.
You're the strong one. You're the one who handles it all. And somewhere under all of that... you're bone tired.
That's your nervous system doing its absolute best for way too long.
And it can shift. It genuinely can.
What It Looks Like at Gelous
When you come to Gelous, you're not walking into a spa that's going to rush you through a treatment and hand you a cucumber water (I joked with Bella Ramsey on The Last of Us set about this.. haha).
Everything here is built around your nervous system. The pace. The touch. The space. All of it.
In a somatic massage The touch is intentional. Grounding. Safe. A lot of women leave feeling lighter than they have in years. Some cry. Some just feel deeply, quietly peaceful in a way they can't quite put words to.
In a somatic facial, we treat your skin like it's connected to everything else, well because it is. You'll see the difference on your face. But you'll feel it everywhere.
Somatic massage and somatic facials in Calgary are giving women that. Real, science backed, body, mind and soul level healing that goes where just talking can't always reach. It's why Calgary therapists are recommending it. It's why more and more women are booking it. And it's why the women who've experienced it describe it the same way every time:
Something released that I didn't even know I was holding.
That's available to you too. You just have to take the first step.
